From the Newport Mercury. To the citizens of the town of
Newport.
[Article discusses the question of what should be done with
the Refugees who return to town. Several paragraphs call
for expelling them as soon as they arrive or to prevent
their landing.]
A member of the British Parliament addresses the Speaker in
some such manner as this,
I Hear a lion in the lobby roar,
Say, Mr. Speaker, shall I shut the door,
And keep him out; or shall I let him in,
That we may have to turn him out again.
Keep the lions out, my fellow citizens! Keep the lions out
!
[signed] An Old Whig.
Newport, April 30, 1783.
